Doris Included in Irish Selection While McCarthy Misses Out

Rugby squad announcement update

Newly reappointed manager the Ireland coach has selected skipper Caelan Doris in his Ireland team for the autumn Tests, however lock McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, who has not played since having shoulder surgery in the start of May, recently returned to provincial training, with doubts lingering if he will be fit to play against New Zealand in Chicago on November 1.

Second row McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot injury he sustained during the opening British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.

Northern province player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster wing Calvin Nash are also absent because of fitness concerns, and number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery after the Lions tour.

Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped player in the 34-man group, but the Irish Rugby Football Union says new Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped Connacht wing Shayne Bolton will head to Chicago as "cover".

Following playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and it's a chance for the more experienced players and for the newcomers on the recent tour to Georgia and the Lobos," commented Farrell, who returns to Ireland duty after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a mostly experienced squad, Leinster's Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the starting number 10 position. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, as Prendergast and Crowley poised to play against each other for the first occasion in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the third fly-half chosen with the coach deciding not to calling up the province's Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has picked British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer Test victories over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a return for Connacht's Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.

Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an veteran group of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the centres, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers James Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and the Lobos.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole new name in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has been in a couple of his province's URC league matches so far and played in the second string's defeat by the English in Bristol earlier this year.

McCarthy was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, but did not receive a cap.

Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those matches, is retained, and experienced Ulster second row Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.

Jack Conan, who started all three Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to cover for the captain should the skipper fails to recover fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on the start of the week before traveling to the US on the following day.
