The White House was preparing on Wednesday to deploy dozens of federal agents to the San Francisco Bay Area for a significant immigration enforcement operation, sparking condemnation from California leaders.

Details of the Deployment

Information of the operation were still emerging, but it will reportedly involve approximately 100+ law enforcement personnel, according to reports. The agents are scheduled to begin utilizing the US Coast Guard base in Alameda, facing San Francisco. It was still uncertain whether state soldiers would join the operation.

Political Response

The operation follows an extended period of threats by the president to take action against the Democratic-run city. California’s governor Gavin Newsom denounced the move, calling it “taken directly from the autocrat's manual”.

“He dispatches unidentified officers, he sends out customs officers, he dispatches federal agents, he instills anxiety and fear in the neighborhood so that he can take credit for addressing that by sending in the national guard,” the governor stated. “This is no different than the firestarter extinguishing the fire.”

Municipal Readiness

San Francisco is the latest large urban area focused on by Donald Trump’s campaign of widespread apprehensions. The mission is anticipated to provoke a showdown between the federal government and local leaders who have vowed to prevent militarized immigration enforcement in the city.

San Franciscans have been preparing for an extended period for Trump to carry out ongoing warnings to deploy forces to the city. At a Wednesday media briefing, San Francisco’s mayor reiterated that the city was ready.

“For months, we have been expecting the likelihood of an impending national intervention in our city,” stated the official, explaining that he had taken further executive actions on Wednesday to “strengthen the city’s protection of our newcomer populations, and ensure our agencies are prepared ahead of any federal deployment.”

Constitutional Context

Despite judicial disputes to deployments in a multiple urban areas, including the Windy City, the Pacific Northwest and Los Angeles, Trump has declared “unquestioned power” to dispatch the national guard in cities, citing the presidential authority which enables presidents limited power to deploy troops on domestic land.

Local Reaction

Newsom, who was formerly as San Francisco’s chief executive – had vowed to intervene “immediately” to a deployment in the city. “The notion that the national administration can dispatch personnel into our cities with no valid reason supported by evidence, no monitoring, no accountability, no respect for local authority – it’s a direct assault on the rule of law,” he said on Wednesday.

Public associations, including civil rights groups created during the previous presidential term, have prepared to quickly mobilize a large protest in the city, as well as peaceful assemblies at community centers.

Neighborhood Consequences

In San Francisco’s Mission area, a predominantly Latino population, local representative stated to media last week she and her residents had been preparing for this moment. “The point that employees avoid workplaces, when people of color can’t freely walk outside without the apprehension of Trump’s federal agents targeting based on race and detaining them, the point when parents stop sending kids to school, become too afraid to go to the grocery store or doctor,” she said. “What we have been preparing for in the Mission is essentially a halt the extent of which we have not witnessed since Covid.”

Military Situation

Roughly 300 out of four thousand regional national guard troops stay under federal control under an order from Trump. About 200 of them had been sent to the neighboring state, where they were staying in standby during a court case over their deployment.
