Female Victim Knifed in Birmingham Bus Shelter Attack Succumbs to Injuries

A woman who was stabbed to her neck area in an unprovoked attack near a bus shelter within Birmingham has died, police have confirmed.

The victim, aged 34 years, came under attack in Smallbrook Queensway, just outside the Bullring shopping centre, shortly before 9 PM GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.

Djeison Rafael, twenty-one, appeared before Birmingham court on Monday, charged over the violent incident.

He was previously accused with attempted murder but following the woman's death the charge has been updated to murder.

Law Enforcement Actions

The force said officers would be around the city centre on Monday to offer reassurance, and investigators were supporting the woman's family.

Investigators are requesting any eyewitnesses who might have observed the accused, identified as British citizen of Black ethnicity, and is believed to have been wearing an all-grey tracksuit, dark headwear, trainers with a backpack.

Incident Location

The stabbing happened near Bullring retail complex, across from the main entrance of New Street railway station.

Police said they were treating it as "unprovoked attack" and Det Insp James Nix said efforts continue to determine why it happened.

Witness Accounts

Shalini Doal, who works nearby, recounted the emergency response after completing her work period at about 22:00 on Friday.

She characterized the location as "quite chaotic", adding that co-workers reported hearing loud disturbances at about 21:00.

"A lot of my colleagues take public transport, ride the tramline... our safety is at risk essentially, here in the city centre."

Another individual, twenty-five, from Stoke-on-Trent, said he came the city quite frequently visiting his partner resident there, expressing concern regarding the incident.

"It makes me worried about my partner," he said.

"She lacks transportation employed at major concert locations... and to think a totally random act [happened], you know, it's horrible."
